The Northwest Territories (NWT) comprise a large part of northern Canada. As many as 33 different communities live in these territories with a total population of 44,000. Yellowknife is the capital city which has a population of about 19,000. NWT is known for its healthcare services and a robust education system. The Northwest Territories Nominee Program or simply known as NTNP, offers an option for foreign nationals to obtain permanent resident status in Canada. The Northwest Territories Provincial Nominee Program is further divided into four streams dedicated to different types of skills and experiences of foreign nationals. They are:
Express Entry Skilled Worker Stream is for the foreign nationals who have an active profile in the Express Entry pool along with a job offer in the Northwest Territories. This stream operates as per the Express Entry process of the Federal government. Successful candidates under this stream will receive a provincial nomination from the Northwest Territories, which grants 600 points through the Comprehensive Ranking System. This score will guarantee an invitation to apply in further draws of the Express Entry pool. The job offer should also be a skilled occupation that is listed at the National Occupational Classification level (either level 0, A or B). Requirements include –
This stream helps the Northwest Territories to fill the labour shortages when there is no suitable Canadian or permanent resident available to take up the job. Workers in semi-skilled and unskilled occupations who require a limited time of training are targeted under this stream. The nominated foreign nationals must be working in level C or D occupations of the National Occupational Classification level to be eligible. If the candidate has a job offer in the Northwest Territories, they will have to work for the employer for at least six months before the employer can apply the stream for the candidate. This stream applies for foreign nationals with a job offer in Northwest Territories in a skilled occupation under level 0, A or B of National Occupational Classification (NOC). Candidates should have a valid work permit and should also be working in a skilled occupation for an employer in the Northwest Territories to be eligible under this stream. Requirements for Northwest Territories Provincial Nominee Program are the same as the above streams except for language proficiency. Candidates should have a minimum of level 6 score in Canadian Language Benchmark scoring for NOC 0 and A level occupations and level 5 score for NOC level B occupations.
As the name suggests, this stream is for businesspeople who are willing to establish or invest in a business in the Northwest Territories. Through this stream, the government welcomes ideas for businesses to help the economy and create employment opportunities. Successful candidates under Northwest Territories Provincial Nominee Program will get support from the territory to apply for a two-year work permit with the government of Canada. Only after operating the business for a continuous period of 19 months, candidates will get the option to obtain a nomination and then apply for the permanent resident status to the federal government.
